Legislative

As an organization that places a high priority on safety, AAA offers its support for H.R. 1618, the “Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act.” In a letter to the legislation’s major sponsor, Rep. James McGovern, AAA says that despite recent declines in crashes involving large trucks, the number of deaths and injuries among passenger vehicle occupants remains high.

Programs

Roadwise Review
Senior Driver Screening Tool

Roadwise Review is a scientifically validated screening tool developed by AAA and noted transportation safety researchers. Available on CD-ROM, this tool allows seniors to measure in the privacy of their own home the eight functional abilities shown to be the strongest predictors of crash risk among older drivers. You can listen to AAA's Traffic Safety Policy Director, Dr. Bella Dinh-Zarr, discuss the program in more detail on the February 7, 2005 broadcast of the internet-only radio program "Coping With Caregiving".

School Safety Patrol
School-Age Pedestrian Safety Initiative

In the 1920s, AAA clubs helped organize a program where older students assist younger ones with crossing streets on their way to and from school. The safety patrol concept spread quickly to communities and schools nationwide. Read about the program and its national event, the School Safety Patrol Parade.

Share with Care
Truck Safety Initiative

AAA's Share with Care truck safety initiative began on June 29, 2000, as a 50-city nationwide campaign to give practical advice to motorists and truckers on how to share the road safely. Read the research and educational materials related to the campaign. Put the Brakes on Fatalities

Highway Safety Initiative

A broad coalition of public and private-sector groups throughout the country have joined together for an annual event called Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day. The goal is to help save lives on America's highways by putting the focus on three primary components to highway safety: 1) driver behavior, 2) vehicle equipment, design and maintenance, and 3) roadway design, signage and road improvements.
